Barnicoat banks points in Pau race two
Ben Barnicoat banked further crucial points in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with a fifth place finish in race two at Pau.
Following his victory in the opening race of the weekend, Barnicoat started from ninth position and as he did earlier in the day, he made an excellent start to leapfrog those ahead into sixth place on a drying track with some damp lines.
With gaps both in front and behind, Barnicoat looked set for a quiet race, but was elevated into fifth place when Carlin’s Alessio Lorandi tapped the barrier causing a puncture to his left rear tyre.
That enabled the Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver to close up on the pack ahead, but on the restart, a further safety car was required. That produced a stuttering close to the competition, and on a circuit which is tough to overtake on, with two minutes remaining, there were no other position changes.
Barnicoat's finish promotes him to third in the overall drivers' standings, and into a clear lead in the Rookies' points.
Barnicoat’s Hitech GP team-mate George Russell scored his first race win of the season from pole position.
Barnicoat will begin tomorrow’s third and final race of the weekend from seventh place.
