Early shunt ends Barnicoat’s challenge

Ben Barnicoat was unable to continue his good form in the second race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship round at the Norisring.

Starting from 12th position, the Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver started well and was soon attacking the gearbox of Carlin’s Ryan Tveter.

On lap three, Barnicoat finally made his move up to 11th position, but soon after Tveter attempted to re-take the place heading into the turn three tight left hand hairpin.

Barnicoat stayed on the conventional racing line, driving the car on the limit with a hint of opposite lock to prevent any oversteer. But Tveter took a different line, and attempted to drive up the inside of Barnicoat.

He collided with the rear left corner of Barnicoat, spinning him around the hairpin and colliding heavily with the concrete wall on the exit, putting both drivers out of the race.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Anthoine Hubert scored race victory ahead of the Prema pair of Lance Stroll and Maximilian Gunther.

Barnicoat will start from 12th place in Sunday morning’s final race of the weekend.
