Pair of P8 starts for Barnicoat at Imola
Ben Barnicoat backed up his strong performance in the opening FIA Formula 3 European Championship round at Imola with a pair of eighth place starts for the second and third races of the penultimate weekend in Italy.
Following difficulties in the previous day’s first qualifying session, Racing Steps Foundation-backed Barnicoat and the Hitech GP squad altered his car’s set-up to a replica of that used by team-mate George Russell who finished fifth in the opening race of the weekend having qualified fourth.
Those changes aided Barnicoat as he stormed up the field from 16th position to take ninth place in race one. And more set-up tweaks aided Barnicoat further as he set his best two times on the final laps of the qualifying session, promoting him to an eighth place start for both of Sunday’s races.
Motopark’s Sergio Sette Camara will start from pole position for race two alongside team-mate Joel Eriksson.
Championship leader Lance Stroll set the overall second best time of the session to score pole for race three, with Van Amersfoort Racing’s Callum Ilott alongside. Barnicoat’s team-mate Russell will start from fourth and third places respectively.
