Start stymies Barnicoat’s progress

A disappointing start to the second race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend at Hungaroring prevented Ben Barnicoat from competing for a podium position.

Starting from eighth place on the grid, RSF-backed racer Barnicoat went wide at turn one to avoid a spinning car in front, losing two places. From there, he became bunched into a pack of up to six cars vying for seventh place.

Barnicoat was unable to make any progress behind fellow Brit and Van Amersfoort Racing driver Callum Ilott, persistently trailing by 0.5 seconds until the chequered flag. Barnicoat's 10th place overall finish handed him a Rookie podium with third place.

Maximilian Gunther made an excellent start to secure victory with his Prema Powerteam team-mate Ralf Aron trailing by over 3.5 seconds. Motopark’s Guan Yu Zhou took third. Barnicoat’s Hitech GP team-mate George Russell finished fourth.

Barnicoat will start the third and final race of the weekend from sixth position on Sunday.
