Barnicoat recorded two wins and five podiums finishes in his first season in car racing, and is the third Fortec driver in a row to take the championship title. Finishing fourth in race one and two, Barnicoat had a safe lead and was favorite to win before race three was cancelled due to fog. The Racing Steps Foundation supported driver took the title by 16 points, a comfortable win for the racer in just his first season of racing after karting.
Ben Barnicoat (Fortec Motorsports):
“I had an amazing year after a difficult start at Monza. I learned a lot this year as this was my first year to race in cars. But I started putting things together and moved up in the field. Having many podium finishes made my season sort of consistent which helped me.
The mechanical error in Assen did cost me a lot of points. But we did not give up and with the win in Most it set me up to be up here.
It has been an amazing rookie year and I have to give a massive special thanks to the Racing Steps Foundation, without whose help I would not have been able to be here and of course the team which looked after me so well.”
Following his title triumph, the 17-year-old took on the streets of the Nurburgring this weekend to take the title and the prize of a test in the prestigious Formula Renault 3.5 series.
Ben's 2015 season plans will see him remain with Fortec Motorsports as he tackles the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Championship next year.
